Over the years the IPL KKR vs RR matches have turned into some of the most eagerly awaited clashes. Both teams are strong, having attracted prominent local and overseas players, such as Pat Cummings and Lockie Ferguson (KKR), or Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer and Jos Buttler (RR).

The overall record is almost in the balance for Kolkata and Rajasthan, although RR have succeeded to pull off some remarkable wins over Kolkata in the IPL seasons.

2020 was not a good year for the Rajasthan Royals, so it’s no wonder that they lost both of their matches with the Kolkata Knight Riders. Both were group stage matches, where the Riders won the first by 37 runs and the second by as many as 60 runs. Both teams didn’t leave the group stage.

Even though 2021 was not good for the Royals but much better for the Riders, their rivalry was relatively even. They first met in match 18 of the season, where the Royals finally got their revenge after winning by 6 wickets. The next meet-up was in early October when the Riders got the upper hand. They won by 86 runs. They didn’t battle it out later, as the Royals didn’t manage to pass the group stage.

Exciting Matches Between KKR and RR in IPL

The Rajasthan Royals vs. Kolkata Knight Riders rivalry has seen lots of exciting matches to be remembered by the IPL fans. Here’s a selection of the greatest RR vs. KKR games:

  • IPL in Jaipur, 2008: The Rajasthan Royals won by 45 runs. This game was an excellent win for RR. Their top scorer was Swapnil Asnodkar ended the game with 60 runs, which was a career-best for him. With this incredible feat, Asnodkar was named the player of the match. He also knocked off 34 balls while facing. The RR ended the game with 196/7 and 20 overs. KKR finished with 151/10 and 19.1 overs.
  • IPL in Dubai, 2020: The KKR beat the RR by 60 runs. This was an exciting game for Kolkata Knight Riders fans, as their team started on the back foot. They conceded 19 runs at the beginning of the game but quickly turned it around. The player of the match was awarded to Pat Cummins for his excellent performance. As a bowler, he ended the game with four wickets for 34 runs from four overs. In the end, the final result was KKR winning with 191/7, and RR with 131/9.
  • IPL in Abu Dhabi, 2014: This game was tense to watch. It ended up as a tie, but RR took the one-over eliminator. Both sides finished with 152 after they’d played 20 overs. This led the match into a super over, where the Rajasthan Royals won because of a higher boundary count. James Faulkner was named the player of the match. He played brilliantly under the immense pressure he and his team were under during that match.

Kolkata Knight Riders

The Kolkata Knight Riders have been in the IPL since its inception, and they are one of the few teams that have played every single one of the 14 completed seasons. The KKR IPL 2022 (IPL 15) performance will also be exciting to watch

As you can see from the KKR IPL record, the team is one of the few that have won the IPL more than once. They won in 2012 and 2014 and were runners-up in 2021.

Their performance in 2021 was genuinely astonishing, primarily for what a close call it was in the league stage. They ended the group stage fourth, having the same number of points as the Mumbai Indians, but the Riders moved to the playoffs due to better KKR IPL stats. Here, they first defeated the Royal Challengers Bangalore by 4 wickets in the Eliminator match. Then, in Qualifier 2, they won against the Delhi Capitals by 3 wickets, but they lost to the Chennai Super Kings by 27 runs in the finals.

The KKR IPL team enters the 2022 edition of the league as one of the favourites to win the championship title. They could even repeat their last game in the IPL, the 2021 finals, which would significantly boost the KKR IPL stats. The initial match of IPL 15 is between the Chennai Super Kings, the reigning champions, and the Kolkata Knight Riders, the runners-up.

As we’ve seen from the KKR IPL record, they had undoubtedly turned things around in 2021, but the road ahead is much tougher. The KKR now has a completely different team, with a new skipper to boot. That new captain is Shreyas Iyer, and he is one of the team’s biggest strengths. However, even though most of the KKR players are solid, the wicketkeeping is one of the worst areas, while the team also lacks enough Indian talent. We’ll see how this translates to them getting a shot at winning the championship title.

The Kolkata Knight Riders have retained four players for the 2022 season. The KKR auction 2022 went like this: Andre Russell for 12 crore, Venkatesh Iyer and Varun CHakaravarthy for 8 crore each, and Sunil Narine for 6 crore. Their biggest buy is the new skipper — Shreyas Iyer, for a whopping 12 crore. Additionally, there’s also Nitish Rana for 8 crore, Pat Cummins for 7.25 crore, and Shivam Mavi for 7.25 crore.

Rajasthan Royals

One of the initial eight IPL franchises, the Rajasthan Royals, is a cricket team known for pretty consistent performances in the Indian Premier League. RR records show that their plays typically ended in the group stage. Nevertheless, they’ve still reached the playoffs four times in the 12 seasons they’ve played from 2008 to 2021

They even managed to win the IPL in its inaugural season. RR stats show that the team entered the playoff stage after finishing first in the group stage, where they won 11 matches of the total 14 they played. Their NRR was the best of all eight teams, sitting at 0.632.

Things changed a lot after that, and 2021 was one of their worst performances yet. They ended the group stage of the contest as second to last with five wins and nine losses. However, their NRR was the worst, being -0.993.

The Rajasthan Royals are looking to change everything in the 2022 season. After three years of being either last or second to last in the group stage, they are looking to return to their former glory. At the very least, they’ll do their best to enter the playoffs. The last time they managed to do that was in 2018.

Their shots are good, as they likely have the strongest team in the current IPL lineup. However, this is all on paper, and there’s no telling if this will translate to real life. The bookies don’t seem to agree, as they have given the Royals odds of 9.00 before the start of the season. At the same time, all the favourites have around 6.00. Naturally, these are still good odds, and it will be interesting to see what the Royals will do on the field in their initial few matches.

Rajasthan Royals only retained three players in their RR auction 2022 — Sanju Samson for 14 core, Jos Buttler for 10 crore, and Yashaswi Jaiswal for only 4 crore. It was clear that the Royals were looking for a fresh start after retaining two wicketkeepers. Their biggest purchases were Prasidh Krishna for 10 crore, Shimron Hetmyer for 8.5 crore, Trent Boult for 8 crore, Devdutt Padikkal for 7.75 crore, and Yuzvendra Chahal for 6.5 crore.

It’s worth noting that the RR IPL 2022 squad is incredibly solid. The team has good openers with Sanju Samson, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Devdutt Padikkal. The same is true for the middle order with Karun Nair and Shimron Hetmyer playing. The line-up is excellent, with great all-rounders and bowlers like Yuzvendra Chahal, James Neesham, R Ashwin, and solid batting, spin, and keeping departments.
