Mumbai Indians are the most successful franchise in the history of IPL, winning the title for a record total of 5 times, including the 2020 IPL season. They have the most well-balanced side on paper and they have managed to replicate this on paper brilliance on-field time and again which has made them the most dominant side in the League in the recent past.
On the other hand, KXIP are yet to get their hands on the IPL trophy even though they came really close to doing it in 2014. They have been one of the most unfortunate sides and have made it to the playoffs only twice in 13 years even after putting together a really good team that has looked threatening in multiple seasons.
Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians have faced each other 26 times in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). It is a tightly fought contest with Mumbai Indians having the upper hand by a very small margin with 14 wins out of these 26 games, whereas KXIP have won 12. Interestingly, they haven’t faced each other in a single playoff game yet.
Their rivalry started off with KXIP registering a convincing win by 66 runs in the inaugural season of IPL in 2008. They ended up winning both their games against MI that year with the second game being a last-ball thriller where the margin of defeat for MI was just 1 run.
MI registered their first-ever win against KXIP in only the second season of IPL in 2009. There have been as many as two seasons (2014 and 2018) where Mumbai Indians have won all of their games against Kings XI Punjab while KXIP has managed to do so in just one such season (2008). The highest and the lowest totals registered by MI against KXIP are 230 and 119 respectively while KXIP’s highest and lowest totals against MI are 223 and 87.
Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians have played some really close games together since the very start of the IPL. Their first nail-biting contest was only their second ever game against each other in 2008.
KXIP managed to sneak in a one-run thriller in their second ever game against MI in the 45th game of IPL 2008. Batting first Shaun Marsh and Luke Pomerbach’s half-centuries in their 133-run stand powered Punjab to the total of 189/4 in their 20 overs. Mumbai Indians were in the command of their run-chase with the help of Sachin Tendulkar’s 65 and managed to reduce the equation to 30 runs required off last 3 overs. But the fall of 2 wickets in the next two overs saw Mumbai needing 19 runs in what turned out to be one of the most dramatic final overs in the history of IPL. The over, bowled by VRV Singh, started off with a no-ball six, a four and a dropped catch and was followed by three run-outs that saw Punjab pulling off an unlikely win from the jaws of defeat by the barest of margins.
It was for the second time in the 2019 season that KXIP and MI were facing each other. Batting first, KL Rahul and Chris Gayle got Punjab off to a flyer by putting up a 116-run partnership for the opening wicket. After the dismissal of Gayle for 63, Mumbai made a comeback of sorts by picking up 3 quick wickets but an unbeaten century from KL Rahul propelled Punjab to a daunting total of 197/4. KXIP were on the driving seat for the major duration of the game and kept picking up regular wickets in the second innings to reduce MI to 94-4 in 12 overs. But it was Kieron Pollard who came to Mumbai’s rescue on his IPL captaincy debut. Promoting himself up the order at number 4, he held on to one end and unleashed the run-flow once he had settled down on the crease to take the game away from Punjab. He hit 10 sixes and was a part of two crucial partnerships with Hardik Pandya and Alzarri Joseph at the rear end of the innings on his way to his 31-ball 83. With two required off the last delivery, it was Joseph who held on to his nerves and finished the game for Mumbai Indians.
For the first time in the history of IPL, the result of a match was decided by a second super over after the scores were tied at the end of regular 20 overs and then the first Super Over. Batting first, Mumbai Indians were restricted to a mediocre total of 176 despite a brilliant half-century from Quinton de Kock. KL Rahul’s 77 put Punjab in a very comfortable position in the run-chase but brilliant bowling from Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult in the death overs brought MI back into the game. Boult bowled exceptionally well to defend 9 runs in the final over to take the game to a super over. Bumrah gave away just 5 runs and picked up 2 wickets in the super over before another brilliant over by Mohammad Shami saw Mumbai Indians scoring only 5 runs in their Super over as well which led to a historic second super over in IPL where Chris Gayle easily chased down MI’s 11 runs to finally seal the game for KXIP in a must-win game for them.
Kings XI Punjab is one of the only five teams to have featured in all 13 editions of IPL. However, they haven’t been able to make an impact on the league and are one of the most unsuccessful sides in the history of IPL, having failed to make it to the playoffs in 11 of 13 seasons.
In their best season so far, George Bailey led the side to their maiden IPL final where they lost to KKR (2014). They have 85 wins in 190 games with an overall win percentage of 45.78%.
The current captain, KL Rahul, has led KXIP in 14 games, winning 6 of them at a win percentage of 42.86%. No other player has scored more runs than KL Rahul since his addition to the side in 2017. His run-tally for the last three seasons with KXIP read 659, 593 and 670. Shaun Marsh has scored the greatest number of runs, while Piyush Chawla has picked the most number of wickets for KXIP in the history of IPL. The current KXIP core consists of KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, Chris Gayle and Mohammad Shami who were also their top performers in the recently concluded IPL 2020 with KL Rahul winning the orange cap. Along with them, Nicholas Pooran and the young Ravi Bishnoi and Arshdeep Singh add balance to the side and were responsible for the dramatic turn-around of KXIP’s campaign in IPL 2020 after the half-way mark.
The current team under the duo of KL Rahul and Anil Kumble look a much stronger side than most years and is likely to put up a tough fight for their maiden IPL title.

The details of the auction have not been finalized yet, but the two teams are likely to retain their core.
