Mumbai Indians are the most successful franchise in the history of IPL, winning the title for a record total of 5 times, including the 2020 IPL season. They have the most well-balanced side on paper and they have managed to replicate this on paper brilliance on-field time and again which has made them the most dominant side in the League in the recent past.

On the other hand, PBKS are yet to get their hands on the IPL trophy even though they came really close to doing it in 2014. They have been one of the most unfortunate sides and have made it to the playoffs only twice in 13 years even after putting together a really good team that has looked threatening in multiple seasons.

PBKS vs MI Head to Head

Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians have faced each other 28 times in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). It is a tightly fought contest with Mumbai Indians having the upper hand by a very small margin with 15 wins out of these 28 games, whereas PBKS have won 13.

Their rivalry started off with PBKS registering a convincing win by 66 runs in the inaugural season of IPL in 2008. They ended up winning both their games against MI that year with the second game being a last-ball thriller where the margin of defeat for MI was just 1 run.

MI registered their first-ever win against PBKS in only the second season of IPL in 2009. There have been as many as two seasons (2014 and 2018) where Mumbai Indians have won all of their games against Punjab Kings while PBKS has managed to do so in just one such season (2008). The highest and the lowest totals registered by MI against PBKS are 230 and 119 respectively while PBKS’s highest and lowest totals against MI are 223 and 87.

The PBKS vs MI IPL 2020 match was the first one in the tournament's history that needed a second Super Over to decide a tie between the teams. Both teams scored 176 at the end of 20 overs and tied at five runs after the first Super Over.

Finally, the suspenseful match ended in a victory for the Punjab Kings. It was Mayank Agarwal who led the team to this result by hitting the winning runs in the second Super Over. Some of the most notable performances for the MI were by Nathan Coulter-Nile, Quinton de Kock, and Kieron Pollard.

The following year saw fortunes change, as the Mumbai Indians managed to defeat the Kings by six wickets. The Punjab Kings batted first, and their innings ended at 135/6. After quickly losing three of its top-order batsmen — Manpreet, KL Rahul, and Gayle, the team got off to a poor start.

On the other hand, the Mumbai Indians lost Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma, and Quinton de Kock. Still, Hardik Pandya, Saurabh Tiwary, and Kieron Pollard managed to turn things around and lead the team to PBKS vs MI IPL 2021 victory.

Top 3 Matches Between PBKS and MI in IPL

Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians have played some really close games together since the very start of the IPL. Their first nail-biting contest was only their second ever game against each other in 2008.

IPL 2008 – MI vs PBKS – PBKS won by 1 run

PBKS managed to sneak in a one-run thriller in their second ever game against MI in the 45th game of IPL 2008. Batting first Shaun Marsh and Luke Pomerbach’s half-centuries in their 133-run stand powered Punjab to the total of 189/4 in their 20 overs. Mumbai Indians were in the command of their run-chase with the help of Sachin Tendulkar’s 65 and managed to reduce the equation to 30 runs required off last 3 overs. But the fall of 2 wickets in the next two overs saw Mumbai needing 19 runs in what turned out to be one of the most dramatic final overs in the history of IPL. The over, bowled by VRV Singh, started off with a no-ball six, a four and a dropped catch and was followed by three run-outs that saw Punjab pulling off an unlikely win from the jaws of defeat by the barest of margins.

IPL 2019 – MI vs PBKS – MI won by three wickets and 0 balls to spare

It was for the second time in the 2019 season that PBKS and MI were facing each other. Batting first, KL Rahul and Chris Gayle got Punjab off to a flyer by putting up a 116-run partnership for the opening wicket. After the dismissal of Gayle for 63, Mumbai made a comeback of sorts by picking up 3 quick wickets but an unbeaten century from KL Rahul propelled Punjab to a daunting total of 197/4. PBKS were on the driving seat for the major duration of the game and kept picking up regular wickets in the second innings to reduce MI to 94-4 in 12 overs. But it was Kieron Pollard who came to Mumbai’s rescue on his IPL captaincy debut. Promoting himself up the order at number 4, he held on to one end and unleashed the run-flow once he had settled down on the crease to take the game away from Punjab. He hit 10 sixes and was a part of two crucial partnerships with Hardik Pandya and Alzarri Joseph at the rear end of the innings on his way to his 31-ball 83. With two required off the last delivery, it was Joseph who held on to his nerves and finished the game for Mumbai Indians.

IPL 2020 – MI vs PBKS – PBKS won in a super over

For the first time in the history of IPL, the result of a match was decided by a second super over after the scores were tied at the end of regular 20 overs and then the first Super Over. Batting first, Mumbai Indians were restricted to a mediocre total of 176 despite a brilliant half-century from Quinton de Kock. KL Rahul’s 77 put Punjab in a very comfortable position in the run-chase but brilliant bowling from Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult in the death overs brought MI back into the game. Boult bowled exceptionally well to defend 9 runs in the final over to take the game to a super over. Bumrah gave away just 5 runs and picked up 2 wickets in the super over before another brilliant over by Mohammad Shami saw Mumbai Indians scoring only 5 runs in their Super over as well which led to a historic second super over in IPL where Chris Gayle easily chased down MI’s 11 runs to finally seal the game for PBKS in a must-win game for them.

Punjab Kings

The Punjab Kings, formerly known as the Kings XI Punjab, is a professional cricket team from Mohali, Punjab. In 2021, the Kings played 14 matches but won only six of them, finishing sixth among eight teams. It has been participating in the IPL tournament since its first edition in 2008. However, the PBKS stats have not been very impressive.

The team has managed to enter the playoff stage of the tournament only twice so far. Even so, the PBKS records mark a notable achievement — the Kings finished the 2014 season as runner-up after playing against the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Despite being an IPL team with one of the worst scores in the tournament's history, the Punjab Kings may still have some notable results in the upcoming IPL. Although most analysts and sportsbooks see the Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals as this year’s favourites, the Kings are not too far behind.

During the IPL auction in February, its management's strategic moves resulted in quite an impressive PBKS IPL 2022 squad. The Kings’ opening department consisting of Jonny Bairstow, Shikhar Dhawan, Liam Livingstone, and Mayank Agarwal stands out as one of the best so far.

On top of that, the team bought back Shahrukh Khan, a Chennai batsman with impressive bowling skills who excelled in the last IPL. Other vital players strengthening the bowling department are Harpreet Brar and Odean Smith.

In addition to Shahrukh Khan, Liam Livingstone is another all-rounder who will be valuable to the team. So will Benny Howell, an English first-class all-rounder and Odean Smith’s backup

Mumbai Indians

Founded in 2008, the Mumbai Indians have participated in the IPL since the tournament’s inception. The current MI IPL record shows that the team is, by far, the most successful one in the league. Fittingly, its value has also been estimated to be one of the highest among all IPL teams.

The Indians won their maiden MI IPL title in 2013 when they defeated the Chennai Super Kings in the play-offs. Two years later, the team managed to win another tournament, outplaying the same contender.

In 2017, the Indians became the first team to snatch three IPL titles, and in 2019 they repeated this success by winning the tournament for a record fourth time. However, the MI IPL stats don’t end here. In November 2020, the Mumbai Indians won yet another IPL, thus becoming the first and only IPL team with five tournament victories.

Yet, the team failed to defend its title in 2021, coming in fifth instead, just ahead of the Punjab Kings.

The Mumbai Indians have retained and brought back some key players who made notable appearances in the previous seasons. Meanwhile, the team also finished its MI IPL auction, acquiring several players that may not be able to uphold the squad's old value.

Only seven of the last year’s MI players will be returning to the field, joined by 13 uncapped players. What’s more, the management also invested eight crore in Jofra Archer, who won’t return until the 2023 season due to an elbow injury. It seems like this strategy will serve the team in the long run, but that leaves us wondering about their performance during the 2022 IPL

In contrast, the current MI lineup has quite a good opening department. The team's top three players are Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, and Rohit Sharma. Not only is Sharma an experienced batsman and the captain of India’s national cricket team, but he has also led the Mumbai Indians to its MI IPL record victories.

While we're looking at the MI IPL stats for 2022, we should also mention the squad’s notable bowlers, including Mayank Markande, Tymal Mills, Murugan Ashwin, and Jasprit Bumrah.
