Sunrisers Hyderabad joined the IPL in 2013 as a replacement for the Deccan Chargers, who had lost their IPL status after going bankrupt in 2012. SRH owner Kalanithi Maran bought the franchise for Rs 425 crore.

SRH quickly became one of the most successful franchises in league history. They won the championship in 2016 after a narrow victory over the Royal Challengers Bangalore. The Sunrisers Hyderabad team also made the final in 2018, but they lost to Chennai Super Kings. In total, SRH reached the playoffs on six occasions.

SRH has put together an impressive cast of talent ahead of the IPL 2022 season, adding 20 players to complement the existing core of Kane Williamson, Abdul Samad, and Umran Malik. With a bid of Rs 10.75 crores, Nicholas Pooran was the most expensive acquisition.

In the 2021 IPL tournament, SRH finished eighth and failed to make the playoffs. As a result of the disappointing season, Simon Katich resigned as Assistant Coach and was replaced by Simon Helmot.

SRH Activity During the IPL 2022 Auction?

The SRH IPL auction 2022 got off to a slow start. After declining to bid during the first round of the event, the team stepped up afterwards, easily outbidding the competition. Instead of experimenting with young guns, they focused on assembling an experienced cast.

The Hyderabad-based team had 68 crore available for the SRH auction 2022 after spending 22 crore to retain Kane Williamson (Rs 14 crore), Umran Malik (Rs 4 crore) and Abdul Samad (Rs 4 crore). SRH had to part ways with their key leggie Rashid Khan but managed to bring back the dynamic duo of T Natarajan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar for a total of Rs 8.20 crore.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad bought 20 players at the auction, including eight from overseas. Their most significant expenditure was on West Indies wicketkeeper-batsman Nicholas Pooran, for whom they shelled out Rs 10.75 crore. Other marquee additions include Washington Sundar, Rahul Tripathi, Romario Shepherd and the South African batsman Aiden Markam.

The SRH is now banking on a newly constructed side to make a massive splash in the 15th edition of the tournament and put behind them the tragic 2021 season in which they ended up as wooden-spooners.

SRH Team for IPL 2022

SRH batsman Kane Williamson was retained with a Rs 14 crore bid, but the team had to release Rashid Khan to the new kid in town Gujarat Titans. The Kiwi skipper has been one of the best players in international cricket over the past few years and has consistently performed at a high level for Sunrisers Hyderabad whenever he got the chance. Following the dreadful run in the first leg of the 2021 season, Williamson inherited the captaincy from David Warner and will likely be appointed SRH captain 2022.

In addition to Williamson, the team retained pacer Umran Malik and batsman Abdul Samad as part of its old core.

West Indies batter Nicholas Pooran and all-rounder Washington were the priciest additions to the SRH squad 2022. These two players have added much-needed depth to the SRH team 2022 batting lineup, which has underperformed in the previous season.

The spinning unit was boosted with new signings Shreyas and Sunder Gopal, who’ll have big shoes to fill given the departure of Rashid Khan.

Meanwhile, there were a few changes in the bowling department. However, most of the core remained intact as the team re-signed T Natarajan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Umran Malik. They’ve added top-tier pacers in Sean Abbott, Karthik Tyagi, and Marco Jansen.

Tom Moody will be the head coach in the 2022 IPL season and work alongside Simon Helmot, who had replaced Simon Katich as the assistant SRH coach.

SRH Biggest Rivalries in IPL

Since its inception in 2013, SRH has developed rivalries with other IPL powerhouses resulting in lots of thrilling cricket action. Historically, Chennai Super Kings are regarded as the biggest SRH rivals. The SRH vs CSK matchup is particularly intense due to the teams’ geographic proximity, both being located in the Bangalore area. They took each other head-on in the 2018 final, with CSK claiming the trophy.

RCB vs SRH has always been an exciting rivalry, with the Sunrisers having a slight H2H advantage. The two teams have clashed horns 19 times, with SRH coming out on top in 10 matches, including the 2016 final win.

One might assume that SRH vs MI is a lopsided rivalry, but that’s not the case. The two franchises have met 17 times, and neither side holds a clear edge. The most successful IPL team has beaten the Sunrisers nine times, with eight fixtures going in favour of the Hyderabad team.

Last but not least, we’d be remiss not to mention the SRH vs RR rivalry in which the Sunrisers hold a slight advantage, with eight wins.
