The IPL 2022 will be the first season to feature ten teams. The league decided to expand with two extra participants, one of which are the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). The team was founded just several months ago and will mark its birthday on October 25. Super Giants will compete in Group A in the new regular season format, alongside Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, and Delhi Capitals.
The Lucknow Super Giants team is based in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh. They will play their home matches at the new BRSABV Ekana Cricket Stadium, which can host up to 50,000 visitors. However, due to continued COVID-19 measures, all matches during the 2022 IPL seasons will occur at the MCA Cricket Stadium in Maharashtra.
What you need to know about LSG
LSG owner is Sanjiv Goenka (RPSG Group). When the league announced in August 2021 that it would add two new sides, as many as 22 companies expressed interest. The high price shortened the list to six bidders, with RPSG Group winning with over Rs 7,000 crore bid to own and operate the team. A competition decided on the new team’s name, and Super Giants came out as the winner in January 2022.
Apart from Sanjiv Goenka, notable names in the team’s administration and support staff include Raghu Iyer (CEO), Andy Flower (head coach), Vijay Dahiya (assistant coach), and Gautam Gambhir (mentor).
As they are a completely new team, Lucknow Super Giants are unlikely to win IPL 2022 or even have a deep run into the playoffs. The team didn’t welcome any experienced players and will have to build chemistry from scratch. Still, without pressure and high expectations, we may witness them making an upset.
The team’s goal is to try their best with what they picked up at the auction and maybe go past the group stage. More importantly, Super Giants want this to be a good foundation year to build from and become more competitive in the upcoming seasons.Join Now Bet Now
LSG Moves During the IPL 2022 Auction
As one of the two new squads, Super Giants enjoyed special privileges before the auction. Namely, they and Gujarat Titans got to draft three players before the action and after existing teams announced their retained players.
The pre-action players they chose included Ravi Bishnoi (bowler), Marcus Stoinis (all-rounder), and KL Raul (WK-batsman), the last of whom is also the team captain and the joint highest-paid player in the IPL at 17 crore. A two-day super auction held on February 12 and 13 determined the rest of the team.
The LSG IPL auction 2022 went relatively well. The team immediately signed Krunal Pandya, an all-rounder released by Mumbai Indians, for 8.25 crore. Other notable pickups included two other elite all-rounders in Deepak Hooda (5.75 crore) and Jason Holder (8.75 crore), bowlers Avesh Khan (10 crore) and Mark Wood (7.5 crore), and batters Manish Pandey (4.60 crore) and Quinton de Kock (6.75 crore).
The LSG auction 2022 was marked by good selections but was pretty expensive. As a matter of fact, Super Giants were the only team at the auction to spend their whole purse.
LSG Squad for IPL 2022
The LSG squad 2022 is a completely new team with players that mostly haven’t played with each other before. The team started strong by drafting three elite players in captain KL Rahul, Ravi Bishnoi, and Marcus Stoinis, spending more than one-third of their 90 crore purse. The LSG coach position went to Andy Flower.
Future LSG batsman Manish Panday was one of the most notable pickups at the auction among 18 added players, as were wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock, bowler Avesh Khan, and all-rounder Krunal Pandya. Their seven uncapped players were purchased for 11.5 crore.
We can see that Lucknow Super Giants have a good variety right off the bat. Even both of their wicket-keepers are batters, and they have an incredible bowler depth. The only thing missing is a one-and-out power hitter, but no IPL team is perfect. Still, Manish Pandy is expected to perform at a high level, while Krunal Pandya can prove a valuable lefty batter. Avesh Khan and Mark Wood should lead the bowlers' department, while Ravi Bishnoi is a world-class spinner and an underrated pickup that came relatively cheap at 4 crore.
At the very least, it seems that it’s going to be fun watching the LSG squad 2022 play and develop. It will also be interesting what they do at the end of this season and which player they decide to retain.
