The rivalry between Delhi Capitals (DC) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) has produced some of the most competitive battles in the history of IPL and one should definitely watch out for these two teams. Both have some of the world’s top players in their rank which attract viewers from all around the globe resulting in a large and loyal fan base for both these sides.

Delhi Capitals (Delhi Daredevils ) had a fairly good start to the League where they qualified for the playoffs in both of the first two seasons. However, they lost track ever since and were the most inconsistent side in the League for years. They changed their name from Delhi Daredevils to Delhi Capitals in December 2018, and that move miraculously worked in their favour, and they finished on top of the table in IPL 2019 to make it to the playoffs for the first time in 7 years, and the SRHeyas Iyer-led side continued their impeccable form in 2020 to make it to their maiden IPL final. However, they were unfortunate to miss out on their maiden IPL glory on both occasions.

Sunrisers Hyderabad have been extremely consistent and have managed to qualify for the playoffs in each of the five seasons of IPL since 2016. They lifted their maiden IPL trophy in 2016 and came very close to repeating the same in 2018 where they were beaten by CSK in the final. David Warner has led the side from the front and has been one of the most successful IPL batsmen over the years.

DC vs SRH Head to Head

Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad have faced each other 20 times in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). SRH have won 11 of these games and have an edge over DC who have managed to win 9.

The rivalry, which started in 2013, have been dominated by SRH from the start. SRH won both of their league games against DC in two consecutive seasons, 2013 and 2014. It was not until 2015 that DC managed to register their first win over SRH in their fifth encounter against each other. There have been as many as three instances where SRH won all of their games against DC in the season (2013, 2014, 2018). DC has managed to do the same only once in 2016. SRH did win both their league games against DC in 2020 as well but lost to them in the Qualifier 2.

Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad first met in the 2020 IPL season on 29 September, and the Sunrisers came victorious by 15 runs. They won again in their next match, and they managed to do so by 88 runs. Both teams passed into the playoffs, where they met yet again, but the Delhi Capitals were better this time, as they won by 17 runs.

After their playoff win, the Delhi Capitals remained the better team in this heated rivalry. The two played two games in 2021, both in the league stage, and the Delhi Capitals won both. However, the first was a tie, and the Capitals then won the Super Over. The next match was more straightforward, where they won by 8 wickets.

Best Matches Between DC and SRH in IPL

Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad have played some close games of cricket in IPL and a lot of them have had nail-biting finishes. The first of these encounters was played in 2015 where an all-round performance by JP Duminy helped DD cross the line in a last-ball thriller.

IPL 2015 – DD vs SRH – DD won by 4 runs

Batting first, half-centuries by JP Duminy and SRHeyas Iyer powered Delhi Daredevils to a fighting total of 167/4. Sunrisers got off to a good start scoring 50 runs in their powerplay without losing a wicket. However, it was JP Duminy’s twin blows in the 7th over that started the troubles for SRH. He repeated the same in the 17th over to reduce SRH to 129/6 and they needed 39 to win in 3 overs. Ashish Reddy and Karn Sharma started attacking the DD bowlers reducing the equation to 10 runs required off the final over. Nathan Coulter-Nile was spot on in the 20th overs and gave away just 5 runs and picked up 2 wickets to ensure that Delhi Daredevils ended on the right side of a nail-biting thriller.

IPL 2018 – DC vs SRH – SRH won by 7 wickets with 1 ball to spare

Prithvi Shaw’s 65 and SRHeyas Iyer’s 44 propelled Delhi Daredevils to a modest total of 163/5. With not enough on the board to defend, DD’s bowlers exerted pressure on SRH since the very start and bowled tightly to reduce SRH to 136/3 after 18 overs. Chasing 28 in the last 2 overs could prove out to be tricky but Yusuf Pathan started the onslaught in the penultimate over by Trent Boult and gave momentum to SRH who failed to defend 14 runs in the final over. Yusuf Pathan’s cameo of 27 runs off 12 balls made all the difference between the two teams.

IPL 2019 – SRH vs DC – Eliminator, DC won by two wickets and one ball to spare

Playing its first playoff game since 2012, Delhi Capitals had bowled well to pick regular wickets and restrict Sunrisers Hyderabad for a below-par total of 162/8 in the first innings. They were in complete command of the run-chase, courtesy a half-century by Prithvi Shaw and even after a few quick dismissals, Rishabh Pant batted beautifully to keep DC on the right track. They needed just 12 of the last 2 overs with 5 wickets in hand. But a brilliant penultimate over by Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, where he picked up 2 wickets- including the crucial wicket of Rishabh Pant- and gave away just 7 runs, brought a late twist into the game. DC lost Amit MiSRHa in the fourth ball of the final over. MiSRHa became only the second player in the history of IPL to be dismissed obstructing the field. With 2 needed in the last 2 balls, it was Keemo Paul who held on to his nerves and hit the second-last ball for a boundary to register Delhi Capitals’ first-ever win in a playoff game.

Delhi Capitals (DC)

Delhi Capitals have been in the IPL since its inception in 2008. They were known as the Delhi Daredevils in the first decade but changed the name to the current Delhi Capitals.

If you look at the DC records, you’ll notice that they haven’t had much success in the Indian Premier League. The team never won the championship, and after a somewhat stronger start in the first two seasons, they were usually in the second half of the table for most seasons.

However, the last three seasons have been different, with the team first entering the playoffs after six years in 2019. The year after, they became runners up for the first time in their history, and in 2021, they were the first in the league stage but lost in the playoffs to both the Chennai Super Kings and the Kolkata Knight Riders. Due to all of that, we hope that the DC stats will show some impressive numbers in the upcoming season.

The DC auction 2022 went well overall, but the team did release a few key players, which led to some criticisms from experts and fans. The team retained a few key names, including the captain Rishabh Pant, all-rounder Axar Patel, opener Prithvi Shaw, and pacer Anrich Nortje from South Africa. They also purchased great players like Mitchell Marsh (₹6.5 crore), David Warner (₹6.25 crore), Ravman Powell (₹2.8 crore), and Shardul Thakur (₹10.75 crore).

The Delhi Capitals have made many changes for the 2022 season, hoping to finally get that champion title they’ve been so close to lately. And other prominent names are still present. Ricky Ponting is still the coach, and the team’s captain is Rishabh Pant, the notable wicket-keeper-batsman who’s been with the team since 2015.

Besides him, the Delhi Capitals also retained Axer Patel, Anrich Nortje, and Prithvi Shaw. Unfortunately, Anrich Nortje won’t join the team at the start of the season, likely for a couple of matches. Player unavailability is a big concern for the Capitals, as Nortje is not the only one.

David Warner won’t be playing the first two games, while Mitchell Marsh will miss the first three. Mustafizur Rahman and Lungi Ngidi are playing an ongoing ODI series, so they’ll miss the inaugural match of the 2022 season.

Overall, the team will have to rely on some newcomers to carry them in the early days of the season. If they manage to garner some wins, the Delhi Capitals will be well-placed to reach the playoffs again. Whatever the case may be, the team is one of the favourites to win the 2022 edition of the IPL, with their odds tied to those of Mumbai Indians.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

The Sunrisers Hyderabad was founded a bit later than most of their competitors from the IPL in 2012. Their first season was 2013 when they had a strong start. SRH IPL record shows they passed the group stage as the fourth in the table but lost to the Rajasthan Royals in the playoffs.

After a good start, they kept ending their stints in the league stage, but 2016 was a big turnaround as this was when the Sunrisers became the new champions of the IPL. This is still their first and only IPL title, but if you look at the SRH IPL stats for later seasons, they typically had outstanding achievements. They entered the playoffs four times, and they were runners up in 2018.

Unfortunately, 2021 was their weakest year yet, as they ended the league stage in the last spot in the rankings. They won only three matches, with all 11 remaining being defeats.

2022 is not predicted to be a good year for the Sunrisers Hyderabad, at least when considering the SRH IPL record from last year and their bookie odds for 2022. Most sportsbooks have given them the lowest odds of all teams, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have a good shot.

A couple of SRH players should be on everyone’s radar as they can easily change the tide for the whole team. These include Nicholas Poorah, the real heavy-hitter with experience, Kane Williamson, the team’s skipper, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, the team’s main frontline seamer, Umran Malik, likely the team’s biggest hope, and Aiden Markram, the classic batter who will probably bring the needed stability to the team.
