The rivalry between Delhi Capitals (DC) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) has produced some of the most competitive battles in the history of IPL and one should definitely watch out for these two teams. Both have some of the world’s top players in their rank which attract viewers from all around the globe resulting in a large and loyal fan base for both these sides.

Delhi Capitals (Delhi Daredevils ) had a fairly good start to the League where they qualified for the playoffs in both of the first two seasons. However, they lost track ever since and were the most inconsistent side in the League for years. They changed their name from Delhi Daredevils to Delhi Capitals in December 2018, and that move miraculously worked in their favour, and they finished on top of the table in IPL 2019 to make it to the playoffs for the first time in 7 years, and the SRHeyas Iyer-led side continued their impeccable form in 2020 to make it to their maiden IPL final. However, they were unfortunate to miss out on their maiden IPL glory on both occasions.

Sunrisers Hyderabad have been extremely consistent and have managed to qualify for the playoffs in each of the five seasons of IPL since 2016. They lifted their maiden IPL trophy in 2016 and came very close to repeating the same in 2018 where they were beaten by CSK in the final. David Warner has led the side from the front and has been one of the most successful IPL batsmen over the years.

DC vs SRH Head to Head

Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad have faced each other 18 times in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). SRH have won 11 of these games and have an edge over DC who have managed to win just 7.

Interestingly, DC’s playoff record has been horrendous and they have won only 2 games in the 5 play-offs it has played in. Both of those wins have come against SRH.

The rivalry, which started in 2013, have been dominated by SRH from the start. SRH won both of their league games against DC in two consecutive seasons, 2013 and 2014. It was not until 2015 that DC managed to register their first win over SRH in their fifth encounter against each other. There have been as many as three instances where SRH won all of their games against DC in the season (2013, 2014, 2018). DC has managed to do the same only once in 2016. SRH did win both their league games against DC in 2020 as well but lost to them in the Qualifier 2.

Best Matches Between DC and SRH in IPL

Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad have played some close games of cricket in IPL and a lot of them have had nail-biting finishes. The first of these encounters was played in 2015 where an all-round performance by JP Duminy helped DD cross the line in a last-ball thriller.

IPL 2015 – DD vs SRH – DD won by 4 runs

Batting first, half-centuries by JP Duminy and SRHeyas Iyer powered Delhi Daredevils to a fighting total of 167/4. Sunrisers got off to a good start scoring 50 runs in their powerplay without losing a wicket. However, it was JP Duminy’s twin blows in the 7th over that started the troubles for SRH. He repeated the same in the 17th over to reduce SRH to 129/6 and they needed 39 to win in 3 overs. Ashish Reddy and Karn Sharma started attacking the DD bowlers reducing the equation to 10 runs required off the final over. Nathan Coulter-Nile was spot on in the 20th overs and gave away just 5 runs and picked up 2 wickets to ensure that Delhi Daredevils ended on the right side of a nail-biting thriller.

IPL 2018 – DC vs SRH – SRH won by 7 wickets with 1 ball to spare

Prithvi Shaw’s 65 and SRHeyas Iyer’s 44 propelled Delhi Daredevils to a modest total of 163/5. With not enough on the board to defend, DD’s bowlers exerted pressure on SRH since the very start and bowled tightly to reduce SRH to 136/3 after 18 overs. Chasing 28 in the last 2 overs could prove out to be tricky but Yusuf Pathan started the onslaught in the penultimate over by Trent Boult and gave momentum to SRH who failed to defend 14 runs in the final over. Yusuf Pathan’s cameo of 27 runs off 12 balls made all the difference between the two teams.

IPL 2019 – SRH vs DC – Eliminator, DC won by two wickets and one ball to spare

Playing its first playoff game since 2012, Delhi Capitals had bowled well to pick regular wickets and restrict Sunrisers Hyderabad for a below-par total of 162/8 in the first innings. They were in complete command of the run-chase, courtesy a half-century by Prithvi Shaw and even after a few quick dismissals, Rishabh Pant batted beautifully to keep DC on the right track. They needed just 12 of the last 2 overs with 5 wickets in hand. But a brilliant penultimate over by Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, where he picked up 2 wickets- including the crucial wicket of Rishabh Pant- and gave away just 7 runs, brought a late twist into the game. DC lost Amit MiSRHa in the fourth ball of the final over. MiSRHa became only the second player in the history of IPL to be dismissed obstructing the field. With 2 needed in the last 2 balls, it was Keemo Paul who held on to his nerves and hit the second-last ball for a boundary to register Delhi Capitals’ first-ever win in a playoff game.

Delhi Capitals (DC)

DC Cricket Team

Delhi Capitals, formerly known as Delhi Daredevils, are one of the five IPL teams to have featured in all of the 13 editions of Indian Premier League. They had a decent start to the tournament by reaching the playoffs in the first two seasons of IPL in 2008 and 2009. After that, they went through a rough patch of nine seasons straight (2010-2018), where they managed to finish in the top 4 on only one occasion (2012) and finished right at the bottom of the table four times (2011, 2013, 2014, 2018). However, they made a comeback in the 2019 season and made it to the playoffs for the first time in seven years and took a step further in the right direction by featuring in their maiden IPL final in 2020 where they lost the title to Mumbai Indians. Virendra Sehwag is the highest run-scorer and Amit MiSRHa has claimed the most wickets for Delhi Capitals in the history of IPL.

DC have won 84 of their 195 games and their win percentage of 43.08% is the lowest among the current 8 teams playing in the IPL. But the current team led by SRHeyas Iyer with Kagiso Rabada, Shikhar Dhawan and young Indian players like Rishabh Pant and Prithvi Shaw in its core, Delhi Capitals have emerged as a formidable side in the past two seasons and the duo of Rabada and Anrich Nortje have proven to be Delhi’s greatest strength in the recently concluded 2020 season.

2020 was their best season so far where they had a tremendous start to the season winning 7 of their first 9 games but they peaked too early and ran out of steam in the second half where they lost 4 matches in a row. But their strong start ensured them a second-place finish in the group stage and they went on to defeat Sunrisers Hyderabad in Qualifier 2 to play in their first-ever IPL final where they were defeated by Mumbai Indians for the fourth time in the season.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

SHR Cricket team

Sunrisers Hyderabad are a relatively new side in the league and were introduced in the 2013 season to replace the defunct Deccan Chargers. They have been one of the most consistent and successful teams in IPL ever since and have managed to make it to the playoffs for five consecutive seasons (2016-2020). They have qualified for the play-offs for six times in total and have won their only IPL title in 2016 by defeating RCB in the final. They finished as the runners-up in 2018 having lost to CSK in the final. SRH have emerged victorious in 65 of their 124 games and their win percentage of 52.42% is only behind MI and CSK in the league.

David Warner has been SRH’s most prolific player and is also the most successful overseas player in IPL. He led them to their maiden IPL title in 2016 where he was also season’s second-highest run-scorer with 848 runs that year. He has scored 3819 runs for SRH since joining them in 2014 and has scored over 500 runs in each of the seasons he has played. He didn’t play a single match in 2018 due to his involvement in the sandpaper gate. He has led SRH in 61 games, winning 34 of those.

Another consistent performer for SRH has been Rashid Khan who has made their bowling attack one of the best in the League. SRH’s core consists of Warner, Williamson, Rashid Khan and Bhuvaneshwar Kumar. Even though some of their senior players were out with an injury in the 2020 season, a few of the young Indian players rose to the occasion and guaranteed SRH a top 4 finish. T Natrajan’s consistent yorkers were a revelation for the Hyderabad side. They are one of the strongest sides in the league and a top contender for the IPL title.

IPL 2021 DC vs SRH Betting and Odds

Delhi Capitals vs Sunrisers Hyderabad betting

IPL 2020, held in the UAE, appeared to be one of the most competitive and exciting IPL editions of all time. Delhi finally broke the jinx and made it to the IPL final, while Sunrisers have come out of what looked like an ordinary season to gain a couple of wins and qualify to the play-offs.

What’s next in the DC vs SRH contest? The next IPL 2021 is just months away with another challenging season lying ahead…

DC will aim to rope in a finisher and an experienced Indian pacer in the auction ahead of the next league and if they manage to do that, they will definitely look a strong contender for an IPL 2021 title.

SRH needs to strengthen their middle order by finding a reliable Indian middle-order batsman ahead of IPL 2021. Manish Pandey is their only option currently and his form has been shaky. Otherwise, the squad looks balanced enough for the upcoming season.
