Delhi Capitals (DC) vs Mumbai Indians (MI) – this has been a much-adored competition in the IPL seasons. Not a lot of teams have taken the fight to MI in recent years like Delhi have. In fact, before the 2020 season, the MI-DC head to head record was all even with equal wins for the two teams. However, the two teams have had contrasting fortunes as far as overall performances are concerned.

Delhi Capitals have been one of the most under-performing teams and they have lost the greatest number of games in the IPL. They started off with two big semi-final performances in the first two seasons but tapered off ever since. But they have picked up pace in the last couple of seasons and they are on the rise. Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians are the best team to have ever played the IPL. Be it the sheer number of wins or the number of IPL titles, MI are the best in every aspect.
Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians have played each other 28 times across the 13 editions of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Mumbai have the upper hand in this contest, winning 16 out of those 28 games. However, Delhi’s 12 wins are the joint-most by any team against Mumbai in the history of the Indian T20 league.
The rivalry has been a very closely contested one. While there have been instances and seasons where a team has dominated the other, every time a team nudged ahead, the other has come back to draw level. MI have remained unbeaten in a season four times against Delhi while the latter has done the same thrice. MI’s four wins in the 2020 season saw them take a lead in their rivalry against DC.
Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians have played some pretty interesting games in the history of the IPL. These two teams may not have played some very close games but the stakes have been pretty high more often than not.
In match number 50 of the inaugural season of the IPL, it was a must-win game for both teams. A win for either side would’ve ensured them a place in the semi-finals. Delhi won the toss and opted to field first. Sanath Jayasuriya’s 66 at the top of the order set the tone before Robin Uthappa scored a 23-ball 46 to finish the innings with a flourish and help MI reach 177 in their 20 overs. The Delhi batters got starts but couldn’t convert them. Dinesh Karthik’s blitz, where he scored an unbeaten 56, took Delhi over the line with a ball to spare.
In the 9th match of the 2018 IPL, Mumbai faced Delhi at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. After being put in to bat, Mumbai got off to an excellent start as Suryakumar Yadav and Evin Lewis put on 102 runs for the opening stand. The former made a half-century while Lewis was dismissed for 48. Ishan Kishan’s 44 continued the momentum. However, the Delhi bowlers came back strongly and conceded just 28 runs in the last four overs. Chasing 195, Jason Roy anchored the innings and batted through. His unbeaten 95 and Rishabh Pant’s 47 took Delhi over the line in a thrilling game which ended off the last ball.
In 2020, it was Delhi’s first final in the IPL while MI made it for the sixth time. But it was the defending champions who strolled past Delhi to win their fifth IPL title. Trent Boult set the tone for MI as he picked up a wicket off the first ball. DC were reduced to 22/3 inside four overs before Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer scored half-centuries to resurrect the innings. However, MI finished powerfully with the ball as Delhi ended up with just 156. In reply, Rohit Sharma’s 68 and Ishan Kishan’s unbeaten 33 helped MI chased it down with ease.
Before 2020, Delhi Capitals (formerly Delhi Daredevils) were the only team among the current eight teams to have never played in an IPL final. They had reached the playoffs (or top four) on four occasions, but they had never crossed the knockouts phase to reach the final. However, that changed in 2020 as they made it to their first-ever IPL final but went down against Mumbai Indians. In fact, over the last couple of years, Delhi Capitals have been playing consistent cricket.
Over the years, Delhi have had some terrific players and their Indian core has always been solid. Right from the likes of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir to Yuvraj Singh and Zaheer Khan to the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant now. They had some big overseas stars like AB de Villiers, Kevin Pietersen, Morne Morkel, Chris Morris, among others. The current lot have overtaken the great players in terms of stats and records.
Shreyas Iyer is the leading run-getter for Delhi and has amassed 2200 runs for the franchise. Rishabh Pant is another one who has crossed the 2000-run mark and is third on the list of most runs by a Delhi player in the IPL. Shikhar Dhawan is in the top five list as well with 1479 runs.
As far as the bowling is concerned, Amit Mishra has been a prolific and consistent performer. He has played for Delhi for the most part of his IPL career and has picked up 100 wickets in the IPL only for Delhi. Kagiso Rabada has become the pace spearhead and has had a big role to play since the start of 2017. He is second on the list of all-time leading wicket-takers – 61 wickets.
There is absolutely no doubt that Mumbai Indians are arguably the best team in the history of the IPL. They were the first time to register more than 100 wins as well. In fact, MI have won the greatest number of games in the history of this Indian T20 league - 118. They are the most successful side as well with five IPL titles and one of the only two teams to have successfully defended their title.
And it is Rohit Sharma who has led them to each of the five titles. It was when he was made captain in 2013, MI’s fortunes took a turn. Since the start of 2013, MI won the IPL every alternate year. They also broke the even year jinx in 2020 and went on to win their fifth IPL title. Their win percentage of 59.11% is the second-best ever in the IPL, only behind Chennai Super Kings’ 59.83%. They started off slowly and didn’t make it to the top four in the first three seasons but since 2011, they have looked unstoppable.
MI’s success has been built on their team management and their scouts who have been excellent. They have unearthed some real stars and they have backed them to the hilt. The Pandya brothers (Hardik and Krunal), Jasprit Bumrah, Rahul Chahar and Mayank Markande are just a few examples.
Rohit Sharma was brought into the franchise in 2011 and since then, he hasn’t looked back. The likes of Ambati Rayudu, Harbhajan Singh were with MI for a number of years. The international stars have been brilliant for the franchise as well. Lasith Malinga and Kieron Pollard have been the icons for the team. Mitchell McClenaghan has been backed by the team as well.
The 13th edition of IPL was moved to the UAE and found whopping success with a tremendous season.
In the auction for the 2020 season, MI bought six players to strengthen what was a strong squad already and used a large chunk of them impeccably in the season. Chris Lynn and Nathan Coulter-Nile were among the big buys while Saurabh Tiwary, despite a fading status, played a few handy knocks.
Meanwhile, DC bought as many as nine players and the likes of Marcus Stoinis and Shimron Hetmyer proved to be massively successful in the 2020’s league.
