Delhi Capitals vs Mumbai Indians - Biggest Rivalry in IPL History

Delhi Capitals (DC) vs Mumbai Indians (MI) – this has been a much-adored competition in the IPL seasons. Not a lot of teams have taken the fight to MI in recent years like Delhi have. In fact, before the 2020 season, the MI-DC head to head record was all even with equal wins for the two teams. However, the two teams have had contrasting fortunes as far as overall performances are concerned.

Delhi Capitals have been one of the most under-performing teams and they have lost the greatest number of games in the IPL. They started off with two big semi-final performances in the first two seasons but tapered off ever since. But they have picked up pace in the last couple of seasons and they are on the rise. Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians are the best team to have ever played the IPL. Be it the sheer number of wins or the number of IPL titles, MI are the best in every aspect.

MI vs DC Head to Head

Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians have played each other 30 times across the 13 editions of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Mumbai have the upper hand in this contest, winning 16 out of those 38 games. However, Delhi’s 14 wins are the joint-most by any team against Mumbai in the history of the Indian T20 league.

The rivalry has been a very closely contested one. While there have been instances and seasons where a team has dominated the other, every time a team nudged ahead, the other has come back to draw level. MI have remained unbeaten in a season four times against Delhi while the latter has done the same thrice. MI’s four wins in the 2020 season saw them take a lead in their rivalry against DC.

The DC vs MI IPL 2020 matches were all quite exciting, as the two teams both made it past the group stage and met in the playoffs and the finals. In other words, they played four matches in total. Unfortunately for DC, MI was playing at their best, winning all four times they locked horns. The first one took place on October 11, 2020, and Mumbai Indians emerged victorious by five wickets (2 balls left). They repeated the same success on October 31, winning by nine wickets (34 balls left). During the playoffs, the team met on November 5, with MI winning by 57 runs. Then, they faced in the finals, and MI once again dominated, winning by five wickets (eight balls left).

There were two DC vs MI IPL 2021 matches, as MI failed to make it past the group stage. This time, DC decided to go for revenge for the four lost matches in 2020, winning both times the two teams met in 2021. The first match took place on April 20, 2021, and DC won by six wickets (five balls left). The second time was on October 2, 2021, and DC was again victorious, winning by four wickets (five balls left).

Classic Matches Between DC and MI in IPL

Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians have played some pretty interesting games in the history of the IPL. These two teams may not have played some very close games but the stakes have been pretty high more often than not.

IPL 2008 – Delhi won by five wickets

In match number 50 of the inaugural season of the IPL, it was a must-win game for both teams. A win for either side would’ve ensured them a place in the semi-finals. Delhi won the toss and opted to field first. Sanath Jayasuriya’s 66 at the top of the order set the tone before Robin Uthappa scored a 23-ball 46 to finish the innings with a flourish and help MI reach 177 in their 20 overs. The Delhi batters got starts but couldn’t convert them. Dinesh Karthik’s blitz, where he scored an unbeaten 56, took Delhi over the line with a ball to spare.

IPL 2018 – Delhi won by seven wickets

In the 9th match of the 2018 IPL, Mumbai faced Delhi at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. After being put in to bat, Mumbai got off to an excellent start as Suryakumar Yadav and Evin Lewis put on 102 runs for the opening stand. The former made a half-century while Lewis was dismissed for 48. Ishan Kishan’s 44 continued the momentum. However, the Delhi bowlers came back strongly and conceded just 28 runs in the last four overs. Chasing 195, Jason Roy anchored the innings and batted through. His unbeaten 95 and Rishabh Pant’s 47 took Delhi over the line in a thrilling game which ended off the last ball.

IPL 2020 Final – Mumbai Indians won by five wickets

In 2020, it was Delhi’s first final in the IPL while MI made it for the sixth time. But it was the defending champions who strolled past Delhi to win their fifth IPL title. Trent Boult set the tone for MI as he picked up a wicket off the first ball. DC were reduced to 22/3 inside four overs before Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer scored half-centuries to resurrect the innings. However, MI finished powerfully with the ball as Delhi ended up with just 156. In reply, Rohit Sharma’s 68 and Ishan Kishan’s unbeaten 33 helped MI chased it down with ease.

Delhi Capitals

Delhi Capitals have been part of the IPL since the very beginning. According to the official DC stats, the team has made it to the playoff round on six occasions. One of the most significant DC records comes from 2020 and its runner-up status. In other words, the popular team has never managed to win the IPL trophy.

DC managed to make three consecutive playoff appearances and is overall ranked well at the moment. However, DC has a generally below-average win percentage (45.67%), as it won a total of 93 and lost 11 matches over the years in the IPL.

The DC auction 2022 results are good, as the team retained its core players, including Axar Patel, Prithvi Shaw, Anrich Nortje, and Rishabh Pant. Moreover, DC bought 20 players in the auction, including David Warner, Shardul Thakur, Mitchell Marsh, Kuldeep Yadav, and Mustafizur Rahman. DC’s purse for the auction was Rs 47.50 crore.

The DC IPL 2022 edition looks solid, but the team has a heavy burden on its shoulders. Namely, the team was ranked #1 for most of 2021 when they reached the playoffs and lost to Chennai Super Kings, who actually won the 2021 IPL.

DC shows a lot of promise in the batting section, with David Warner and Prithvi Shaw as the hottest batting duo. We recently learned that Shaw failed to pass the Yo-Yo test, a special fitness test for professional athletes, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t expect him to give his best in the upcoming season. There’s also a lack of high-quality spinners, except for the players such as Axar Patel.

Despite these small drawbacks, DC should provide decent performance in the IPL. Rishabh Pant will lead the team against the Mumbai Indians as their first opponent in the IPL 2022 season.

According to numerous bookmakers on the web, this will be an exciting match as Delhi Capitals are currently the second favourite for winning the trophy. There’s just one small issue — the first favourite is Mumbai Indians, meaning we’re up for an exciting and uncertain season.

Mumbai Indians

The MI IPL record of five trophies in the IPL makes the team the best-performing one in the league since its inception. Mumbai Indians were proclaimed champions in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020. According to the official MI IPL stats, Mumbai Indians failed to make it to the playoffs only five times. The team played a total of 204 games since 2008, with 120 won and 83 lost, recording the win percentage of 58.82%.

The first two MI IPL years (2008 and 2009) weren’t really successful for the team, as it failed to make it to the playoffs both times, ending in fifth and seventh position, respectively. After that, Mumbai Indians made it to the finals in 2010 and continued their successful streak in the years to come. The three other times MI failed to make it to the playoffs was in 2016, 2018, and 2021.

Interestingly, one of the biggest MI rivals is exactly Delhi Capitals. The two teams have played 30 matches since 2008, with MI winning 16 and DC 14. MI has the second-lowest win percentage against DC (53.33%).

Despite being five-time champions, Mumbai Indians failed to repeat that success in 2021, with the MI IPL record of seven wins and seven losses. In other words, the team failed to pass the group stage. On top of that, no other MI IPL stats were satisfactory this year.

Despite all that, Mumbai Indians are still the first favourite for winning a trophy, as there are plenty of great MI players who are ready to give their best and return the team’s former glory. Some players worth mentioning include Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Ishan Kishan, Tim David, Kieron Pollard, and Suryakumar Yadav.
