However, the two franchises have had contrasting returns in IPL. While Chennai Super Kings have been one of the most successful teams in the Indian T20 league and have made it to the top four in every season that they have played, Punjab Kings have been underachievers in the IPL and have reached the playoffs only twice.

CSK vs PBKS Head to Head

Chennai Super Kings vs Punjab Kings has happened 22 times in the history of the IPL with the last encounter happening in the 2020 season. Chennai have won on 13 occasions and Punjab have won nine times, including a Super Over win back in 2010. Even though the head-to-head record is in favour of CSK, there have been a lot of close contests where the battle has swayed constantly.

It was CSK who gained the upper hand in the first three seasons. The MS Dhoni -l ed side won the first five encounters against PBKS in the first two seasons. In 2010, PBKS won a tied Super Over contest before CSK wrestled one back in a must-win clash. The story has been different since 2011, though. Since the start of 2011, Punjab have won eight times and went unbeaten against CSK in 2012 and 2014. Meanwhile, CSK have gone unbeaten against Punjab in four seasons (2008, 2009, 2013 and 2015).

The Punjab Kings and the Chennai Super Kings played two games in the 2020 season of the Indian Premier League. The Super Kings managed to win both matches. In the first one, they won by 10 wickets, and they weren’t far behind in the second one, where they defeated the Kings by 9 wickets.

2021 was slightly different for the rivalry, as the Punjab Kings finally managed to break the losing streak against their super foes. However, this only happened in the second match of the two they played for the season. In the first one, the Super Kings won by 6 wickets, while the Punjab Kings won the second match also by 6 wickets. The victory didn’t mean much, though, as the Chennai Super Kings still went ahead to win the trophy, while the Punjab Kings ended their play right there in the group stage.

The Spectacular Matches between CSK and PBKS in IPL

Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings have played some riveting contests. The first time they ever faced each other in 2008, CSK won by 33 runs but nearly 450 runs were scored in that game. But the first real nail-biter came in 2010.

IPL 2010 – CSK vs PBKS – Match tied (PBKS won the Super Over)

The first match in 2010 between these teams saw a Super Over. Punjab made 136 with Yuvraj Singh and Irfan Pathan doing the bulk of the scoring. Chennai got off to a sound start as the opening pair added 65 before the middle-order crumbled. Eventually, 10 runs were needed off the final over and then one run off one ball but Ravichandran Ashwin hit one straight to mid-off to force a Super Over. On IPL debut, Juan Theron bowled a fantastic Super Over which led PBKS to their first win over CSK.

IPL 2010 – PBKS vs CSK – CSK won by six wickets

Later in the same season, in the 54th league game (the last for both), CSK needed to win to qualify for the semi-finals. Shaun Marsh batted beautifully to drive PBKS to 192 in their 20 overs. Irfan Pathan played a fine hand as well. Chasing a stiff target, CSK lost their openers cheaply but Suresh Raina and Badrinath steadied the ship. Dhoni walked in at No. 5 and played a powerful knock and finished off the game with an unbeaten 54. CSK needed 29 off the last two overs and 16 from the final over but Dhoni’s two sixes that won CSK the game will remain an epochal moment in the history of the IPL.

IPL 2014 - CSK vs PBKS, 2nd qualifier – PBKS won by 24 runs

CSK and PBKS met in the second qualifier in 2014. CSK have an ominous record in the playoffs and semi-finals and had lost just one knockout game prior to 2014. Hence, PBKS had a mountain to climb but they had already beaten CSK twice that season and went on to register their third. Virender Sehwag’s scintillating ton helped PBKS post a mammoth score. Chasing 227, Raina went berserk in the powerplay and helped CSK get to 100 in the first six overs. But his dismissal led to the downfall of CSK and they eventually lost by 24 runs.

Chennai Super Kings

The Chennai Super Kings are one of the most successful cricket teams in the Indian Premier League. They are the current champions of the IPL and the only four-time winners. They hold the title of the second-best team of all time in the league, right behind the Mumbai Indians.

CSK records also show us that the team has managed to be runners-up five times, and since they’ve participated in the IPL for only 12 seasons in total, this is definitely an incredible success. In other words, out of the 12 seasons, they haven’t reached the finals on only four occasions.

It will be interesting to watch CSK IPL 2022 since the team is the defending champion and will have to defend the title against nine teams, as the IPL once again has ten teams participating.

The Chennai Super Kings bought a total of 21 new players at the CSK auction 2022, while they retained four key names — Ravindra Jadeja for ₹16 crore, MS Dhoni for ₹12 crore, Moeen Ali for ₹8 crore, and Ruturaj Gaikwad for ₹6 crore.

They’ll enter strong with 25 players, 17 of which are Indian, while the remaining eight come from overseas. The team is betting heavily on the returning MS Dhoni, the 40-year-old captain of the team.

Out of the 21 new players on the list, the most significant purchases include Deepak Chahar for ₹14 crore, Ambati Rayudu for ₹6.75 crore, and Ruturaj Gaikwad for ₹6 crore.

Тheir biggest strength will actually be the batting line, including the orange cap winner from the last season — Ruturaj Gaikwad, and notable names like Ambati Rayudu, Moeen Ali, Ravindra Jadeja, and Robin Uthappa.

However, their bowling department is a bit weaker than last year. Deepak Chahar is injured, and everyone expects him to miss as much as half of the entire season, if not more. The team doesn’t have a suitable replacement in place, and they can only hope that Dhoni will find a hidden hero in the squad on time. .

Even though the Super Kings are the reigning champions, they are not the favourites to win the season. Their odds of winning are weaker compared to the Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians, and their big rivals — the Punjab Kings. .

Punjab Kings

The Punjab Kings have been in the IPL since its inception, but despite being the Super Kings’ biggest rivals, the PBKS IPL record is not as shiny. The differences are actually striking, as the Punjab Kings are one of the worst teams in the IPL, at least when you look at their previous record.

Apart from that, PBKS have been below par in most seasons of the IPL. Over the last couple of seasons, they have started off really well but have fallen away in the second half of the tournament. They won five and four out of their first six games in 2018 and 2019 respectively but ended up finishing seventh and sixth in those two seasons. And it’s not that Punjab haven’t had big names. They just haven’t been able to perform and live upto expectation. In fact, statistically, with 99 losses, they hold the record for the second-most number of losses in IPL history.

2021 was not a good year for them either. They ended the group stage in the sixth spot, placed above only the Rajasthan Royals and the Sunrisers Hyderabad. They won six games in total and lost eight. However, their play against the Super Kings was actually good, as they lost the first match but won the second one near the end of the group phase.

The Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians are the favourites to win the upcoming IPL, but the Punjab Kings are not far behind in the pools. The PBKS IPL stats might not show it, but this team has good chances to win because their auction went more than well.

Punjab Kings retained only two names — Mayank Agarwal for ₹12 crore and Arshdeep Singh for only ₹4 crore. This left the team with a massive budget for the remaining players, and they spent it more than well.

They purchased many notable names to strengthen each part of their gameplay. The biggest names include Liam Livingstone for ₹11.5 crore, Kagiso Rabada for ₹9.25 crore, Shahrukh Khan for ₹9 crore, Shikhar Dhawan for ₹8.25 crore, Jonny Bairstow for ₹6.75 crore, and Odean Smith for ₹6 crore.

The team looks great on paper. For instance, the batting unit is excellent as it consists of fantastic PBKS players like Dhawan, Mayank, and Bairstow. None of them played for the Kings last season, but the trio still has a lot of experience, especially when scoring some big runs.

Punjab Kings have an incredibly solid team poised to make some fantastic performances in the upcoming season.
